During the more than two decades of work I've done on this project, I've visited learned societies and museums, pored over exhibition reports and their illustrations, rummaged on library shelves. I've fallen down research rabbit holes (pharaonic tie-on beards, my goodness!), puzzled over photographs, pondered the events they reveal. All this to bring to the fore just some of the less familiar stories hiding within.
